BAY CITY — Twenty-one years in the U.S. Army have conditioned Anthony Banaszak to instinctively work well under pressure.
Those ingrained instincts fueled Banaszak, 40, to perform an act of heroism worthy of the Soldier’s Medal last month. The award is given to members of the U.S. Army who exhibit heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy.
In June 2009, the Bay City native saved two young women from drowning near the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Banaszak has been stationed in Hawaii since 2004.
Banaszak noticed the women attempting to cross a reef to get to a nearby island, despite waves about 30 feet tall rolling in.
