John A. Laverty passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2019 surrounded by his family at McLaren Bay Region. He was born May 5, 1945 in Saginaw, Michigan. John was a 1963 graduate of Handy High School and attended Delta College. He retired from Delphi in 2002 after 36 years of service in the Engineering Department. John coached many years of football at Handy High School, Central High School and Handy Middle School. He enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and friends in the Higgins Lake area. His other favorite hobbies included model railroading, golfing with friends, and following local high school sports.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeannie (Lauria); son, John Jr. (Sandy) of Midland, MI; daughter, Jill (Jeff) Knecht of Elmhurst, IL; daughter, Jennifer (Steve Huck) Englehardt of Manchester, TN; son, Jason of Novi, MI; grandchildren, John III (Payten), Erin (Qwinn), Amanda (James), Nate, Emerson and Eloise and great grandchildren, Brayden and Benjamin. John was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Hazel (Kay) Laverty.
Funeral and committal service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Campbell. At the request of John, cremation will take place following the service with private burial in Heavenly Rest Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the Gephart Funeral Home on Saturday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 noon until the time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers may wish to make a memorial contribution to the Kawkawlin Community Church or the Bay City Central High School Booster Club.
