Joyce Ann (Underwood) Schwarz of Saginaw passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at St. Mary’s of Michigan. She was 78 years old. Joyce Ann Underwood was born on September 9, 1932 in Bay City to the late John and Esther (Bock) Underwood. She was married to James P. Schwarz on August 25, 1951 in Bay City. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1989. Joyce was a graduate of T.L. Handy High School in 1950. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and former member of the Altar Societies of St. Christopher and St. George Catholic Churches. Joyce volunteered for over 40 years at St. Mary’s Hospital. She enjoyed the beautiful Michigan evenings on her swing in the front yard and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Joyce shared her love of cooking and baking, often sending out care packages. She loved traveling, senior bus trips, crocheting, gardening and weekly lunches with friends.
Joyce is survived by her daughters: Janet Phillips, Judy (Tim) Horonzy, and Jerilyn (Tony) Escamilla; four grandchildren: Tara (Gonzalo) Fernandez-Vedoya, Christopher Phillips, Jared and Jeff Horonzy; four great-grandchildren: Kailash, Luna, Xavi and Ethan; a sister-in-law: Rosalie Englehart. Several special nieces and nephews, cousins, wonderful neighbors and faithful friends also survive her. Joyce cherished those relationships that were nurtured throughout the years.
She was also preceded in death by her son, James J. Schwarz; and two infant brothers: Donald and John Underwood.
Joyce’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the physicians and staff of St. Mary’s Hospital for the exceptional care that was provided.
FUNERAL: A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State St. Rev. Fr. Randy Kelly will officiate with entombment to follow in St. Andrew Mausoleum.
VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Joyce will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
